Back to blogging; How to achieve your 2021 writing goals

Happy New Year, writers! Here’s to a year of writing progress and success. I’ve had a few weeks off from blogging, taking a much needed break. But I enjoy it too much to leave it for good, so I’m back, and talking about ways you can achieve your 2021 writing goals. Take a peek!

Carve out designated writing time
Life is busy, and undoubtedly you have a lot more commitments in your life than just writing. It is important to fit writing in when you can, making the most of unexpected quiet moments. But it is also vital to carve out designated writing time when you can. Not only does it make for great progress, but it gives you something to look forward to when life is getting in the way of writing.

Fight writer’s block
We’ve all heard of it, and we’ve probably all had it. But writer’s block, as frustrating as it is, is beatable. There are a number of methods for beating writer’s block, including freewriting, reading, and simply relaxing.

Create a timeline for your novel
Last year, I struggled on my novel for months before realising my error. I hadn’t created a timeline. As such, all my chapters were all over the place, nothing made sense, and I never knew which direction I was heading in. Save yourself the hassle by creating a timeline early on. It doesn’t need to be strict or rigid, and you should certainly change it if the story takes you that way. But having that loose outline is so valuable.

Get involved with the writing community
There’s nothing as effective at keeping you on track, as being surrounded and supported by other writers. The online writing community is full of people in your situation, who understand the highs and lows of the writing journey. I have been a part of this community for years now, and constantly meet people who inspire and motivate me.

Don’t give up
It sounds simple, but don’t give up. On anything. It can be so temping to give up on an idea, but you learn so much when you finish your work. So keep at it, don’t put down the pen, and keep going.

What are your writing goals for this year? I’d love to hear what you’re working towards, so please comment below.

Keep writing,

  1. I just happened upon your post and wanted to share that this was very informative. I have recently decided I might get into doing some writing besides just a few articles here and there on my blog. Not sure where to begin, but this is definitely a great start. Thanks so much!
